Benny Hassum Interview!

Tell us a bit about yourself, how long have you been a DJ?

Well, I’m a massive lover of electronic music which started when i was in high school many moons ago. Originally i was into Hard NRG / Hardstyle but as soon as I heard a bassline from Junior Jack, my musical taste changed drastically to House! Just the sexy groove of a house / tech house bassline lured me in and shall keep me for a long long time. So now I have been DJ’ing for about the last 8 months and I do it most days of the week either at home, parties, or various clubs in the Valley in Brisbane.

How were you introduced to the world of Dj’ing and when did you get behind your first set of decks?

For a long long time, I have been interested in DJ’ing. The music, the parties, the lifestyle and the ability to start the party! My first real introduction to actual DJ’ing came about at the start of the year when I met a guy called Kris Lisman (DJ KAYLI). He taught me the ropes and from then I haven’t looked back. Iv just practiced hard and am now just keen to get out and about in the club scene.

What experience do you have in the Brisbane Music Scene and whats coming up next for you?

My first gig came about at a club night called Thirsty Thursdays… Hectic night out which i wasn’t really expecting. But was very very fun and had a heap of mates there to make it even better! Hopefully the things coming up for me next are getting signed to a label for the music i produce myself, and also just getting into a lot of the clubs and becoming a regular force in the scene.

Whats the big goal for Benny Hassum? Where would you like to be this time next year?

My big goal is to obviously get signed to a label. Ive been working very hard on producing in the studio and it would be a big dream of mine to get signed. Also a big goal of mine is to play at a festival of some sort. Just rocking out the crowd on a massive day! In the next year, i see myself still working hard on my music and also getting a few residencies at various clubs.

Producing, what are you working on at the moment and can you give us a bit of insight on what your using?

Ive got a few tracks in the pipeline at the moment. Ive just started working with another guy by the name of Luke Satchell. He is a freak at producing, engineering, mastering. So this should be a good step forward in learning the tricks of the trade. I’m using Cubase to write my own music, iv gone across a few different genres, mainly house/electro/tech house/ Dutch House. I’m just trying at the moment to find my own sound which is very important, but in saying that, I love to play around with different genres.

Any favorite Tracks at the moment?

Well, this could go on for quite a while, but ill narrow it down to genres…
TECH HOUSE: Seriously, anything by Kaiserdisco. They are legends at producing.
DUTCH ELECTRO: Canblaster – Chicken Run and also The Squatters – Monster

Are there any artists that you look up to?

Kaiserdisco are some guys that I look up to and also Bart B More, Drop the Lime, Afrojack, Sidney Samson, Swedish House Mafia and Jay Lumen.

Other than yourself, who would you say to look out for in the Brisbane scene?

There’s a few guys I know that are doing really really well. One for sure is Morgan Baker… he is really killing it at the moment. Also, a friend of mine Kris Lisman (DJ Kayli). Just scored a residency at Family / Empire. He’s been working hard for a long time now and its just so good to see him moving forward.

Finally, Favorite/Funniest Club memory that you have experienced so far?

My favourite club memory is actually a festival one. Its a tie between this years Creamfields and Summafieldayze… Both epic festivals with huge lineups and good times 😀
